Hangar Gym

Whitney, Texas

Year Built: 1950

Home Team:  Whitney Wildcats

Notable:  The gym was acquired from Camp Swift in Bastrop County to replace the previous gym which had been destroyed by fire.

Camp Swift was an armed services infantry training facility that had a surplus of buildings following WWII

The building’s original cost for the US Government was $167,000; Whitney’s “transfer” cost was $1340

Following the transfer, the materials were reassembled into a gym in less than a year.

Beyond games, the Hangar Gym has been the hub of community activities over the years such as dances, band concerts, graduation ceremonies and the Lake Whitney Beauty Pageant, serving as the school’s main gym until 1995.

In 2016, the gym was redesigned to accommodate the filming of the Sci – Fi thriller “The Vast of Night” by Director Andrew Patterson.
